Q: What is granite?

A: Granite is formed from the earth's molten mantle. As the hot liquid material rises and eventually cools, it forms a crystallized and granular appearance. Granite is derived from several hard minerals including quartz and mica which when fused together, become a very hard stone.

Q: What is marble?

A: Marble is a form of limestone that is created by pressure and heat, changing its structure to be crystalline and sugary. Marble tends to have a translucence or whitish appearance, with some veining.

Q: What is the difference between marble and granite?

A: While granite and marble seem similar in many ways, they have some distinct differences. Granite is formed deep in the earth at very high temperatures, and is derived from crystallized minerals. It is a very hard, durable, and resistant stone. Alternatively, marble and the marble family (including limestone, onyx and travertine), begin as a sediment (animal matter, shells, plant matter, silt), and after millions of years turns into stone. Marble's primary component is calcium, making it susceptible to any type of acid (including foods and beverages that contain acid).

Q: Why is granite used for countertops?

A: Granite is a very hard surface, making it very durable. It is fairly resistant to scratching and heat, compared to other stones.

Q: Can granite be damaged?

A: While granite is a very hard and durable stone, it can be damaged. Due to its crystalline structure, there is the possibility that it can chip if hit with a hard or sharp object. Granite can also stain, if it is not sealed upon installation, or if not sealed every 6 months. Oil and wine are easily absorbed. While resistant to heat, we recommend not placing hot items directly on the surface.

Q: Why is marble used for countertops?

A: Marble has a beautiful honed finish, and is very durable. However, marble does have the tendency to scratch more easily than a harder stone, such as granite.

Q: Will my stone countertop have seams?

A: Most stone countertops will require at least one seam. When our professionals come to view and measure the area, they will be sure to minimize the number of seams required. During installation, they will ensure that the edges fit snug to further decrease the appearance of seams.

Q: Is it important that I seal stone?

A: Yes. All stone is porous, and will absorb any spills or stains. Some stones, like marble, tend to be more porous than others, so be sure to use an appropriate sealer to prevent staining. For more information, see the Stone Care page.

Q: Do you have other colours available besides what's on your website?

A: Yes. We have a variety of colours and styles available. Our website features some of our most popular patterns, but we are not limited. Also, it is important to keep in mind, that each stone is unique. No two stones will ever look alike. The patterning you see in our online gallery, will look different when you are in our showroom.

Q: How do I clean and maintain natural stone?

A: Use products that are specifically formulated for your type of stone. Never use household cleaners, as they can cause damage. Also, be sure to use soft cloths. Abrasive pads may scratch. See our Stone Care page for recommended products.

Q: If I provide you with a countertop sketch with measurements, can you give me an estimate?

Yes. Be sure that all measurements are exact, and always allow for a 1.5" overhang on all cabinets. Please also note any curves or preferred edging. We will also require details of your sink area, whether undermount or drop-in. If you would like us to remove your existing countertop, make a notation, and we will figure this into the quote. For best results, we recommend an in-home visit.
